Toon Squad against Hong Shing did not disappoint in the finals for the Competitive Tuesday
division. This game had a kittle bit of everything happen throughout the night from some
knockdown shooting to double techs. You could feel the intensity from the opening tip.
The defending champions took control of the game early on and were knocking down
seemingly every open 3 they got. Toon on the other hand were missing looks they have
knocked down all season, and committing some bad turnovers as well. That being said, they
were able to hang around and keep the score close going into the half despite the hot shooting
od Hong Shing. The 2 nd half saw Hong Shing explode out of the gates, taking over on both ends
and going on a run to push their lead as high as 19. Toon were in trouble, getting outrebounded
and reeling from the Hong Shing attack. They slowly began to piece it together and chip away at
the lead, but could not get over the hump. They were forced into a timeout around the 7
minute mark after Hong Shing pushed their head back to 19. It was from this point on where
the game got real.
Hong Shing began to slow the tempo and try to grind out possessions I stead of continuing their
flow. Toon squad used this their advantage though by forcing turnovers and getting out in
transition for quick easy buckets or FTs. Hong Shing lost their rhythm with each layup or
transition 3, as Dickson, Mohammed and Co. caught fire from deep late. We entered the final 2
minutes with Hong Shing up 10. Toon Squad kept coming, closing the gap to 5 with 1 minute
left and began playing the foul game. It worked to their advantage after some clutch 3's by
Samy Mohammed, the game actually ended up tied with 12 seconds left. But then, the steady
hand of the Hong Shing attack, “El Cinco” Simon Cummings took the ball up, drove the lane and
hit a tough and well defended floating mid range shot that dropped in so smooth you would
swear there was no mesh hanging. He left 3 seconds on the clock though, and was almost
burned by a Mohammed half court heave that hit front rim. Congratulations to Hong Shing for a
solid season, as they become the first repeat champion in the division since the Bugatti Boys.
